Day 17 | Trying Something New. Something Better. #shorts

As I was standing in the shower this morning, I had a moment of self-realization. I had my recent worries and anxiety over my personal challenges to distract me from what I wanted/needed to do. And I end up confusing my tasks and kind of got off-track (well, slightly). Good thing is that I haven’t gone too far off so it should be easy to just move the work done around. It is in moments like these that I’m thankful that I’ve made the decision to keep a detailed log of the portfolio showcase project. This is actually something that I’ve never really done before. Not even at the previous height of my career. For the most part, I’ve always been more of a taking action kind of guy. I would often just jump right into the work. And when it finally comes time for me to work on the documentation, I would realize that I don’t remember many of the things I had already done (and changed) along the way.

That is one of the most common pitfalls of being what I consider a “traditional” developer. Most developers tend to prefer jumping straight into the work of building something rather than to take the time to log down their ideas, plans and goals. Sure, it can be tedious work. But looking at where I am now with respects to my current portfolio showcase project, I am super thankful that I have kept my project log detailed & concise.

I wanted to share about what happened this morning because it also reminded of those times in my career when I wasn’t afraid to stick my head out and to try something different (sometimes to propose a different, perhaps unpopular approach). It is by trying new things, trying to do things differently that we can discover better ways to do something. If we keep doing things the same way, sure, we might feel comfortable where we are, but we will never learn anything new, and we most certainly won’t grow from the experience.

When was the last time that you tried something new, or proposed a new solution/approach/strategy? What was the experience like for you? Share it with me in the comments section.
