Today, I was reminded of one of my favourite quotes of all-time by Wayne Gretzky, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” As I spend my week reflecting and thinking about the importance of “Following Through”, I am also reminded that it is important not to let my own fear of failure stop me from taking another shot. I suppose it might be true that risk adversity might be a result of our individual personalities. Some of us might be more willing to take risks, while others might be more cautious about it. I belong to the latter group. For most of my life, I’ve always been more comfortable staying within the safe confines of the invisible boundaries that society and culture norms have set for us. I’ve spent most of my life living within those constraints, until I didn’t. A decade ago, when I finally decided to take that huge leap of faith, I still remember how terrifying it felt. I knew then that there was no guarantee that I would succeed. I knew that there would always be a possibility that I would fail. But I also remembered thinking to myself, “I don’t want to wake up 10 years from now, wondering if my life would’ve turned out differently if I had just tried something different.” Since then, I have been learning to see taking risks in a different light. I am still a rather cautious individual, but I am definitely more willing to consider certain risks too. My reminder for today is that it is always better to take a shot 🏀 and miss, than to never try at all.
